PMR

Private Mobile Radio is a traditional method of communications with mobile assets, where a centralised base station transmits in all directions to mobile (in vehicle) and portable (hand held) radios. Operates in the VHF and UHF bands.
Wi-Fi

Wireless technology aimed at providing short range data access between main network and wireless/mobile users. Now offering data rates up to 108Mbps
802.11

A family of wireless networking standards, including:

• 802.11.a - Operating using the 5 GHz radio band with 'connectivity' speeds up to 54 Mbps
• 802.11.b - Operating in the 2.4 GHz band with 'connectivity' speeds up to 11 Mbps
• 802.11.g - Operating in the 2.4 GHz band with 'connectivity' speeds up to 54 Mbps

WiMax

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. Primarily intended for long range data transmission and so called 'last mile' connections. Applications include point to point (PTP) links for long-haul, backhaul connections and wide area networks.

WLAN

Wireless Local Access Network, a LAN that can be connected to via a wireless connection.

TETRA

Terrestrial Trunked Radio, advanced 2-way radio systems allowing channel sharing and advanced functionality for professional users, emergency services and organisations including Police, Ambulance & Fire Brigades.

CELLULAR

Broad term covering mobile phone systems providing countrywide coverage using individual networked 'cells'. Third generation (3G) now providing high speed mobile data and video calling

ZIGBEE

A suite of standards covering short range, low power data links for Wireless Personal Area Networks. Intended as a simpler and cheaper solution to Bluetooth.

IP CCTV

Technology for connecting IP based CCTV cameras wirelessly to the main network. Various technologies available include WiFi and WiMAX.
